Fair Isle goes wrong when it covers the whole sweater. You end up looking like a Christmas card.
Here the pattern is kept to a band across the chest and sleeves, between a plain upper and a cable-knit lower body in a darker shade. It is a cotton blend, with a quarter-zip stand collar and a small tab at the chest and hem.
Cotton is lighter than the wool Fair Isle is known for. That makes it wearable indoors all winter, and it machine washes gently at 30°C.
Wear it with chinos on a cold walk to the pub, or zipped to the chin on the ferry deck.
